Depression and anxiety are some of the most common and debilitating mental health disorders that can negatively impact all aspects of health. If these disorders are not treated effectively and efficiently, both quality and quantity of life are at risk of decline. Although not all human beings will experience clinical depression or anxiety, most people will experience a wide range of emotions such as sadness, hopelessness, fear, and joy.
Emotions are cues, they provide us with information, and are necessary to support survival. Recognizing and understanding what emotions are presenting will help keep us safe, potentially motivate us towards change, and will ultimately help keep us alive.
Learning to recognize, examine, allow, tolerate, manage and accept challenging emotions is foundational within the context of the human condition, and establishing self-compassion is vital in supporting this healing process.
Experiencing fear is part of the human condition; however, when disturbing events occur, some individuals experience reactivity in the central nervous system that can stay locked in emergency survival modes such as; flight, flight or freeze. This hyper or hypo arousal can significantly impair and cause wear and tear on all aspects of bio-psychosocial health and impact overall quality of life.
If individuals experience heightened levels of chronic stress on a daily basis, they may also experience feeling stuck and / or caught in a phrenetic energy of the nervous system moving really fast but not really moving forward. For example, car tires doing a burn out... one foot on the gas and one on the break... it is called burnout for a reason.
"Anxiety isn't you. It's something moving through you. It can leave out of the same door it came in." James Clear
